Chris specializes in rock mechanics issues relating to mine design, pillar extraction, mine safety in the fall of ground risk area and has a special interest in pillar design. Chris has considerable experience of coal mining conditions in South Africa, and has mining experience in hard rock conditions in both shallow and deep mines. He has also managed the development of tunnelling operations and has worked in deep level longwalls.
Chris’s specific expertise includes rock mass characterization, stability analysis, slope design, stope design, monitoring and instrumentation, waste dump design, mine closure, secondary extraction design, and tunnelling. Chris has undertaken consultancy work in coal, gold, zinc, cobalt, potash, copper, platinum, and chrome mines in South Africa, Indonesia, Australia, India, China, Malaysia, PNG, Swaziland, Zaire, and the UK.
