End of 2018 and AMC welcomes five new principals

As the industry continues to pick up, more and more clients are turning to AMC to help them uncover hidden value in their projects. To keep up with this increased demand, the global AMC team continues to expand.

We are pleased to welcome five new principals to our global team: Frank McCann join as Technical Manager/ Principal Mining Engineer (Toronto), Carsten Kraut as Principal Hydrogeologist (Perth), Matthew Nimmo as Principal Geoscience and Mining Data Analyst (Brisbane), Lachlan Macdonald as Principal Geologist, and Andrew Millar as Principal Metallurgist. Together, these fantastic professionals and experts in their fields, bring with them more than 105  years of experience to AMC’s capability. AMC warmly welcomes them and looks forward to their contribution to our team of global experts.

Francis McCann

Technical Manager/ Principal Mining Engineer (Toronto)

Francis (Frank) possesses extensive international experience across the Americas in open pit strategic mine planning development and execution. He has strong technical and analytical abilities combined with a solid business acumen and an innovative mind. With more than 25 years of experience, Francis has strong technical and analytical abilities and is a successful leader in the recruitment and development of professionals to form high-functioning teams working within multi-disciplinary environments.

Prior to joining AMC in 2018, Francis was Senior Manager for Open Pit Mining at Barrick Gold Corporation where he provided technical support to global operations and governance functions for the corporate office. From 1997 to 2016 he held a series of positions with Barrick in Chile and Peru, including Senior Regional Manager from 2013 to 2016. In these roles he was tasked with the creation and development of a regional mine planning and geological modelling team focused on optimization of mine designs and life-of-mine plans across the South America Region, consisting of three large open pit gold mines and one large open pit copper mine.

Carsten Kraut

Principal Hydrogeologist (Perth)

Carsten’s 24 years of theoretical and practical experience include groundwater resource evaluation and development in the mining and construction industries, hydrogeological characterization to support geotechnical investigations and environmental site assessments.

As a highly experienced consultant, team lead and hydrogeologist, Carsten’s experience has spanned from project direction and management to technical lead and field supervision on projects both large and small.

Prior to joining AMC, Carsten was a principal hydrogeologist at Australian Potash Limited where he managed the exploration and definition of the brine hosted Potash Resource at Lake Wells. The role included conceptualization of the hydrogeological system, seismic surveying, exploratory drilling, bore construction and testing, to facilitate development of a numerical model to define the resource.

Matthew Nimmo
Principal Geoscience and Mining Data Analyst (Brisbane)

Matthew is a geologist with 25 years experience in the mining industry. After many years focused on mineral resource estimation and statistical modelling of geological data, Matthew branched out into more diverse analysis of geochemical, hydrology and geometallurgical data. Latterly, he worked as a data scientist for two years in the Maintenance Center of Excellence (McOE) at BHP, supporting their Total Equipment Strategy process.

Matthew is experienced in geostatistics, data cleaning, multivariate data analysis, data visualization, data validation, outlier detection, machine learning, optimization, classification, clustering, regression, dimension reduction, and applied computational intelligence. He is proficient with Datamine, Vulcan and R statistical programming and a variety of other software and programming languages. He qualifies as a CP/QP for a variety of commodities and deposit styles.

His expertise and experience will deepen AMC’s capability in multivariate data analysis for geometallurgy, geology and business improvement.

Lachlan Macdonald

Principal Geologist (Perth)

Lachlan is a principal geologist with more than 16 years of accumulated expertise across multiple commodities (copper, gold, iron, nickel, cobalt, molybdenum and others), international projects, and multi-national teams. He has led large technical geoscience teams through major studies, with a strong focus on geology, innovation, delivery and collaboration across the spectrum of geology and mining disciplines.

Lachlan has worked on both open pit and underground projects. His primary focus now lies in mineral resource definition (drilling, data evaluation, geological interpretations and modelling). This extends to technical reviews of geological data and the preparation and estimation of mineral resource estimates using block modelling techniques and geostatistics. Lachlan is a specialist in a wide range of mining, modelling, geostatistical, analytical and database software. He qualifies as a Competent/Qualified Person under several international codes.

Andrew Millar

Principal Metallurgist (Brisbane)

With more than 16 years in the mining industry, Andrew is experienced in the mining project life-cycle from discovery to operations. His expertise includes metallurgical testwork (bench and pilot plants), process engineering and flowsheet design, as well as plant operation and optimisation. Andrew also has a strong focus on techno-economic modelling and financial evaluation of process flowsheets.

In addition, Andrew has experience in a variety of unit processes including comminution, flotation, gravity separation, ore sorting, hydrometallurgical processes and pyrometallurgical processes and his commodity experience includes coal, zinc, gold, silver, copper and lead.
